CODESRIA's
Governance Institute is an interdisciplinary effort to bring together African
scholars working on topics related to governance. The aim of the Institute is to
promote research and debates on issues relating to the conduct of public affairs
and management of development in Africa.
The
Institute was launched in 1992 and is organised in collaboration with Cheikh
Anta Diop University of Dakar, Senegal. It is designed to bring to bring to
together and forge links among, and meet the needs of a new generation of
scholars in terms of access to recent documentation, participation in current
debated on governance and democracy within the social sciences, and retooling
research methodologies. A total of thirteen to fifteen African and a few
non-African scholars participate in the Institute each year.
The specific objectives are as follows:

encourage the sharing of experiences and methods among researchers around a
common theme over an extended period of time;

to
promote and enhance a culture of democratic values that allows Africans to
effectively manage issues confronting Africa;

to foster a critical participation of scholars in the
discussions on democratisation and governance in Africa
