Cairo Gender Symposium

African Gender Research in the New Millennium: Perspectives, Directions and Challenge, Cairo, 8–10 April, 2002

CODESRIA, in collaboration with the Arab Research Centre, hosted a three-day symposium in Cairo, Egypt, from 8 to 10 April, 2002 on the theme of African Gender Research in the New Millennium: Perspectives, Directions and Challenges. The symposium was designed to serve as a multidisciplinary forum for taking stock of the state of gender studies and gender research across Africa, as well as to map out an innovative agenda for new directions with regard to themes, methodologies, concepts and perspectives. The symposium was structured in a manner as to allow for an intensive and critical dialogue on the range of issues that were discussed. For this purpose, participation was encouraged from different methodological, conceptual, generational and disciplinary backgrounds.

Papers presented at the symposium fell under one of the following broad sub-theme:'

  • Concepts, methodologies and paradigms
  • Gender relations and social institutions / processes (family, education, health, religion, culture, law)
  • Access to and control of resources
  • Gender and socio-political dynamics (violence, conflicts, democratisation, citizenship etc.)
  • Gender, the economy and globalisation
